Takashi Naito, 61, and his wife, Yoko, 59, own a house in Tokyo. The couple have also bought another house in Hokuto, a city at the southern foot of Mt. Yatsugatake in Yamanashi Prefecture, which they have owned for 20 years.

She said with a smile, “Maybe because I can mentally reboot − working in Tokyo and farming in Yamanashi Prefecture − I don’t feel much fatigue from the commute.

Takashi retired from his job last year, and spends more time in Hokuto than his wife does. It was his decision to buy a second house.

Takashi loves climbing mountains, and wanted to live in a place with views from mountain areas. After visiting various sites, he chose Hokuto for the views from its beautiful landscape.

Since then, he has spent a long time participating in the local community. “While seeking advice on farming in the field, I gradually gained the understanding of the local residents,” he said.

In 2013, the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry conducted a survey on 2,000 people in their 20s to 60s.

“If there are already people in the area with dual homes, who have gained the trust of other residents, many such cases can be successful, because connections have been forged between local residents and newcomers,” Ikemoto pointed out. “If prospective residents can meet such people at consultation events and other functions, they can have a sense of security.”
